BELMONT—Today, Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek is thrilled to announce that Ontario’s Ministry of Education has approved the tendering of a new $8.7 million elementary school in Belmont as part of Thames Valley District School Board’s 2019-20 Capital Priorities funding.

The new facility will accommodate 345 pupil places and necessitates the consolidation of both South Dorchester and Westminster Central Public Schools, two small and underutilized elementary schools in the district constructed in 1965.

“From modernizing our curriculum to revitalizing our classrooms and their facilities, we are investing in our students and giving them every tool to achieve their full potential,” said Education Minister Stephen Lecce. “Our financing of the new Belmont elementary school in Central Elgin further demonstrates our government’s historic investment in Ontario’s schools and our overall commitment to supporting our students and families.”

The site for the new school has not yet been acquired. It is projected to open for the 2023-24 school year.

“I am incredibly proud that our government has recognized the need for a new, modern elementary school in the community,” said MPP Jeff Yurek. “This investment meets the needs of rural residents in Central and East Elgin and ensures a promising future for students and their families.”
