ELGIN-MIDDLESEX-LONDON – Today Jeff Yurek, Minister of Transportation, announced that the Ontario’s Government for the People is helping municipalities in Southwestern Ontario and across the province to expand and improve public transit.
These area municipalities are receiving funding under Ontario’s Gas Tax program:
- London - $10,341,542 – to support operations by the London Transit Commission (LTC)
- Thomas - $396,614 – to support St. Thomas Transit
- Marys (with Thames Centre, Perth South, and Zorra) - $121,907 – to support the St. Marys and Area Mobility Service
- West Elgin (with Newbury and Southwest Middlesex) - $35,454 – to support the Four Counties Community Transportation Services
“Our Government for the People is delivering on transit funding to enhance service for people that depend on the LTC, St. Thomas Transit and other local transit services across Ontario,” said Jeff Yurek.
This year, the province is giving $364 million in gas tax funding to 107 municipalities that provide public transit service to 144 communities across Ontario.
“This funding is good news for people that depend on the Four Counties Community Transportation Services for doctor’s appointments and other special needs,” he said.
Municipalities receiving gas tax funding must use these funds towards their public transit capital and/or operating expenditures, at their own discretion, including upgrading transit infrastructure, increasing accessibility, purchasing transit vehicles, adding more routes and extending hours of service.
“Extra funding will help strengthen the St. Marys and Area Mobility Service, Yurek said”
